Yeah, yeah, I’m back at school after a nice long car ride. Blarg. That’s okay though. T.J.’s a good driver and good company. But it was nice to arrive and be greeted by Furman’s famous fountains. (yay alliteration? *rolls eyes*)
Thanksgiving was good, if busy. I think it tends to be the least relaxing break we get. Spring break is the same length, but then I’m the only one of my friends home, so I end up sitting around the house doing lots of not much.
So I was kept fairly busy, but it was good busy – spending time with J.C. and with the gang and with family…and eating good food! Hoorah for home cooking!!

…but Thanksgiving break is soooo close! I can almost touch it! And there’s so much to do between now and then. *sigh*
(Next week at this time, next week at this time…it’s become my mantra recently. It serves me well.)
Last night I has to watch a movie for my German class. It was based on a true story about the Comedian Harmonists, a world-famous singing group (a male quintet and a pianist) from the late 1920’s into the 1930’s, when the Nazis decided that they should break up because three of the six were Jewish. It was good!
It reminded me a little of Life is Beautiful, which I saw a week or two ago – it is incredibly sweet and very good! It’s in Italian, which is a beautiful language to listen to. Yay for subtitles!
The beginning of The Comedian Harmonists was a little bit eerie – in trying to get the group going, they were facing problems that were VERY similar to ones faced by the a capella ensemble I’m in (10 After 12). Would that we could overcome our difficulties so successfully!
Tonight, lots of water is falling from the sky. Unfortunately, when I left the dorm at four this afternoon for oratorio rehearsal, it looked like the weather was clearing up, so I left my umbrella behind. It was still clear after rehearsal at six, but by the time I got off work at ten, there was a steady rain coming down. Fortunately, despite the old rhyme, I’m made of a little more besides “sugar and spice and everything nice,” so getting soaked was nothing a warm shower couldn’t fix.

My roommate left me this morning…
I was glad she went, though. Her parents came up to take her home – with any luck, she’ll get better faster in her own bed. Pneumonia is icky.
Friday night I went to see the theater department put on “Twisted Tales from Shakespeare” which was well done and very funny! They took Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and acted out rather Monty Python-esque versions with only four actors (two male, two female). Narration was supplied by a stereotypical pompous scholar (who also discussed things like Shakespeare’s background and the authorship question), with comic remarks from the “Footnoter”. The program alone was hilarious – one whole page was headed with the warning “After the program, there may be a test”. It contained such gems as
(on Hamlet)
1. Have you noticed how, in Shakespeare’s plays, when people said they saw a ghost, they usually did? Were people more trustworthy in those days? Were ghosts?
and
(on A Midsummer Night’s Dream)
2. What is your idea of a wild thyme?
and, as a message from the author of the book the play was based on, Richard Armour,
“Since I have been a longtime professor of literature at a number of colleges and universities, you may wonder whether I ever taught Shakespeare. How could I? Shakespeare died in 1616.”
I was in stitches just reading the program.

This weekend surprised us all by getting cold…and now that we’ve all pulled out our sweaters, the temperature’s back up and gorgeous. I took my laptop outside for a couple hours (=battery length), which was very nice. And I got stuff done, really, I did!
Just a tip, folks – DO NOT ask Stephen about goats, chocolate syrup, golf clubs, and a rubber chicken. Our poor Jachyra is a sick little puppy. And if he tries to tell you that I’m an inhuman monster, well…smile and nod. He might be better in the morning, but I’m not holding my breath.
Speaking of sick, my roommate is coming down with something. Again! Poor thing, she’s hardly been healthy since we moved in this year. And I started having some sinus problems about the time we moved in…very minor, but persistent. I’m starting to wonder if we’re living in a “sick building”… I hope not, I like Judson, but it would explain a thing or two.

The day started on a good note, though – I got out of the extra math class and into the satire class.
It’s been a long day, though. Had an info meeting on the study abroad trip I’m hoping to go on next fall this afternoon. It sounds exciting…also a little scary, especially the food part. This is why I’m going to England, not Germany (ummm…keine Milch, bitte?). Well, part of the reason. Details later, I promise.
And then we had some decidedly obnoxious people around at work tonight…*sigh* It wasn’t really busy, though, so I did get homework done. Heehee, I love getting paid to do homework.
Anthropology test in the morning – sleep is sounding like a good idea.

The official excuse here is that I want to see how it looks with TWO entries.
(Yeah…and a month later: “Now I wanna see how it looks with sixty-three entries!!” I won’t. Promise.)
I registered for classes last Thursday, and found out the results this morning. I had signed up for one math class and put down another as a backup.
Naturally, the computer decided to give me both of them.
Fortunately, tomorrow is drop/add day – I only need one math!!!! I plan to replace it with an English class on satire. I’ve heard that a lot of people don’t like the professor, but my advisor recommended the class to me, so I’ll trust her judgement. At least until I meet the man.

The Katie in her almost-natural habitat. Aka, the dorm room.
These are the sorts of pictures that happen when one lets her roommate play with her toys – er, I mean her camera…

The intimidation of a blank screen is overwhelming me…
This seems particularly ironic since I officially declared as an English major this afternoon.
We’ll leave it at that for now.
