Furman on Ice
January 27, 2004 8:32 pmWe’ve had two snow days, and are hoping not to have another…on the one hand Greenville is fairly hilly, but at the same time, there doesn’t seem to be much effort to get salt trucks out there…I dunno. I just know that there’s got to be only so much class we can miss without having to make it up somehow.
Yesterday, a friend and I took a long walk around campus and around the lake, which was fun! Here are a few pictures.

The lake, the belltower, and snow. Prettiness!

It just amuses me to see ice on the magnolias.

This was hilarious. When we saw it the first time, after brunch, the banana was sitting there, frozen into the ice on the stairs!! By the time we got back with cameras, someone had kicked it out, but I’m still amused.

Bwahaha!
January 25, 2004 9:26 pmWe have a snow day tomorrow!!
The forcast for Greenville said we were just supposed to get freezing rain today, but the white stuff started coming down about midday. We thought it wouldn’t stick, but it did! There isn’t much, but it doesn’t take much for South Carolina to start shutting down - concerns about icy roads, mostly. That does open the door for lots of jokes about silly South Carolina from professors who come from places like Montana and Wisconsin.
Funny thing - last December there was a day when there was ice in the forcast, so people in my anthropology class started in with, “Well, Dr. S., if your driveway looks a little icy tomorrow, we’ll understand if you can’t make it to class. You could just go ahead and cancel, we wouldn’t be too disappointed…” Which is amusing in itself, but what makes it hilarious is that this is the man who came into class every day with a mug that said “University of Wisconsin” on it!

Friday evening: Goin’ Places
12:33 amHad a good time Friday night - two friends and I went out to eat at Fazoli’s, and then went downtown. Downtown Greenville is so pretty! It’s a far cry from Fort Walton’s strip of tattoo parlors and cheap-looking tourist shops. The shop we had wanted to find (a sort of create-your-own jewelry place called the Beaded Frog) had already closed for the night, but we wandered around for a bit, found several other nice little places, then came back to watch Star Trek.
At Fazoli’s, there was a group of girls there who (I swear) must be from Bob Jones University. They had the right look - all in long skirts with very plain shoes and conservative shirts. We always wonder a bit at people who go to BJU - it’s a VERY conservative Baptist school, to the point of seeming out of touch with the modern world. Curfew at 10pm, no jeans (and certainly not shorts), that sort of thing. The idea rather disturbs me, personally.
We had an annoying run-in with the woman taking money at the parking lot we ended up using, though. She seemed nice enough at first, and there was a great spot open, one of those that you can drive straight into. Unfortunately…there were three drawbacks. First, the spots were a bit narrow. Second, we were in an Explorer, which is of course not the hugest SUV that exists, it’s not small, either. Third, on our left was a large van, parked quite close to the line. So we ended up fairly close to, and probably a bit on top of our right-hand line. Well, this woman wasn’t happy with that, making us scoot over…and scoot over a little more… And then, she was sweet enough to come up to the window and “sympathize”: “Oh, are you a beginning driver, dear?” “Well, you know, when I was teaching driver’s ed, all the girls always have trouble telling how far away things are, but the boys come right in and parallel park perfectly!” “You know, I have trouble with that sort of thing too, all girls do.” It was actually quite insulting. The rest of the trip was great fun, though!

Your wings are DRAGON wings. Massive and
covered in scales, they shimmer with strength
and magic. They are the most obvious display of
your power - though it runs equally throughout
your heart and mind. You are uncompromising and
grave, with a profound sense of justice. You
have firm ideas about what is right and what is
wrong and set out to fix what problems you can.
You realize that you are more capable of
dealing with life and evil than most, and as
such you see it as your responsibility to
protect those who cannot defend themselves. You
have existed since antiquity and as such you
are wise far beyond your years in this
lifetime. While you strive for fairness and
peace, if someone should steal from your cave
of treasure (though not all that glitters is
gold) or compromise the happiness of you or one
who is close to you - they have signed their
death warrant. You have a mighty vengeance and
will unleash it upon such people immediately
and mercilessly. Arguing with you is
useless…you rarely back down and are known
for holding firm in your beliefs. Sometimes you
feel intensely burdened with the troubles of
others…acting as a Guardian can get so
wearisome. But you never give up…you see it
as your life’s mission. Often very introverted,
you can be so smart…it’s scary. Such a
combination of intelligence, creativity, power,
beauty, and magic is often intimidating to
those around you - who are also unlikely to
understand you. Arrogant, proud, overserious,
and sometimes a bit greedy or obsessed with
whatever treasure you choose to pursue…you
have enchanted people for centuries, and will
continue to do so.

Yeah…for what that’s worth. I was just amused to come up with *dragon* wings, though.
My roommate and I are watching Fellowship of the Ring right now, with the cast commentary on. Merry and Pippin are so funny! …And Orlando Bloom is totally, like, a California boy with a British accent, ya know? Yet another reason not to idolize an actor just because he plays a cool character. No, Orlando, just stop! Shut up!! You just said that! Stop digging! *sigh, rolls eyes*

I live!!
January 19, 2004 8:37 amHaving not posted in over a month, I thought I might come back to this after all. Christmas was wonderful, Return of the King was awesome, and I’ve been back at school for two weeks now. Getting back was a story or three in itself - first my flight out of Fort Walton was cancelled and rebooked for one that arrived in Greenville at midnight. Then I had a short layover in Memphis…I made it to the plane, but my suitcases did not. I had to wait another 24 hours for the stupid airline to get its act together and get them to me. I am not a fan of Northwest Airlines right now.
One thing that was amusing - I was talking to a Northwest agent about my suitcases before I left the airport that night, and he was commenting on the airport code for FWB. “I’ve never understood how they get VPS from Fort Walton Beach,” he said. I explained that the VPS comes from Valpraiso, which is closer to the airport than Fort Walton is. Ahh, the satisfaction of solving a lifelong mystery…
I think this term is going to go all right. If nothing else, it will go quickly - our short winter term is less than two months. It’s billed as being 8 weeks, but if you actually closer to seven, and that’s counting exams. We only take two classes, but they’re longer than usual, and it’s pretty intense. I have a math class (finite mathematics) which is proving to be incredibly easy. We had a test last Friday. I’m not worried. My other is an English course in satire, which is pretty interesting. We started with a couple of plays from ancient Greece by Aristophanes, did a little Roman stuff, and quickly jumped to Restoration England. We’re spending lots of time on Jonathan Swift just now, which I have mixed feelings about…he’s not so fun to read.
I’ve also gotten involved in Pauper Players again, which is a completely student-run drama group. This year the show is Fiddler on the Roof. I don’t have a big part, just one of the random villagers (basically, I got cast as a Jewish mother), but I’m excited.
To make sure we have no sad pandas or sad pugs running around, please note the new address of this site (www.ladyvulcan.com) and pat J.C. on the back for setting this up for me.
