Took long enough…
May 26, 2004 9:48 pmClasses are finally over!
Today was the official last day, though two of my classes finished yesterday. I had my English final on Monday (a sort of second midterm rather than a true final, really), and we generally got Wednesdays off in German, so she let us have this one too. So today was just the last day of HES. And there was much rejoicing.
I also had my voice jury this afternoon, so that’s another “final” down. I had to sing two pieces for the voice faculty (about six teachers): I got to choose the first, and they chose the second on the spot from a list of the songs I worked on this term. I picked a Mozart piece from Marriage of Figaro …which is kind of a story unto itself. See, the character who sings this aria is a page boy, but he’s always played by a woman for whatever reason. So among other things, I had to work on looking at least vaguely masculine, which was very interesting! Anyway, that went well, and then the faculty actually chose the song I was hoping they would! Of the other two, one I don’t know as well, and the other…well, apparently a lot of people are singing it this term, so they would be less likely to pick it for me. So all’s well. I get results on Friday, but I’m not concerned.
Work has been absolutely crazy of late – many projects due in the last few days! The best is when a whole class has to come down for something….and they all wait until the last minute! And then they’re upset when the equipment is booked by their classmates and we won’t stay late. Cry me a river, kiddos, you were told to start early. I have no sympathy. It’s crazy.
So now all I have to do is study for two exams and pack (my friends here hate me a little for that…can’t blame ‘em). I’ll probably put in some time at work during exams, too. Policy is that you don’t have to work your hours during exams, and whoever wants to can pick up extra. It’s usually quiet in there after classes end.
Not much longer now.

Further random amusement
May 22, 2004 11:09 amI was amused by this one when I saw it on Liz’s blog.
Choose a band or artist and answer only in song titles by that band:
Jimmy Buffett
Are you female or male: She’s Got You
Describe yourself: Delaney Talks to Statues
How do some people feel about you: I Don’t Know and I Don’t Care
How do you feel about yourself: Don’t Chu-Know?
Describe where you want to be: Beach House on the Moon
Describe what you want to be: Fruitcake
Describe how you live: Quietly Making Noise
Describe how you love: Love in the Library
Share a few words of wisdom: Math Suks
On a different note…three days of class, then exams, and I’m out of here! Dad’s driving up to get me a week from Monday, and then we’ll go home the next day after my 9 am HES exam.

…a month later…
May 14, 2004 10:44 pmHi!
…no, I’m not dead. Really.
It’s that time of year again when everything is hectic and all nonessentials get shoved aside, I’m afraid. If it makes you feel better, even my letters to my parents got forgotten two weeks in a row. Finally got caught up on that – called home on Mother’s Day last week. (E.T., phone home! err, right)
Tonight I finished my second English paper in the last two and a half weeks. Well, “finished.” E-mailed it to my professor for her to take a look at – I asked Thursday if I could come show it to her on Friday, but she wasn’t planning to be on campus on Friday because her parents are in town. (They came to see her lecture.) So she said I could e-mail it to her this weekend.
The lecture was one she was giving on the letters of Elizabeth I. The Greenville Library System currently has a travelling exhibit on Elizabeth, so they’ve had all sorts of lectures and such on related topics. Somebody somewhere along the line decided that it would be great fun for this 16th century English lit. class I’m in to get in on the act. So we’ve not only been doing big presentions, but doing them for the public… no pressure, really.
Actually, my group got off easy in a way. When we signed up for presentation dates at the beginning of the term, one of the choices was a Saturday morning children’s presentation. Not something I normally might have gone for, but I didn’t get to the sign-up sheet very quickly. Most people didn’t want that one because it was during Beach Weekend, which is when Furman unofficially moves to Myrtle Beach.
Anyway, that presentation was last Saturday, and it was actually kinda fun! We had about seven well-behaved kids (almost too quiet), and we talked at them a little about Elizabeth and pirates and the Spanish Armada, and read a story. And then we tried to “recreate” the Spanish Armada. We put the kids (with us for guidance) in big loops of rope (”boats”). Jarod led the English boat and I led the Spanish one…somehow most of them wanted to be English, funny how that happened.
And then we threw big soft pom-poms at each other for “cannonballs” – they enjoyed that a lot! We also made little boats – I had designed the pattern earlier that week and they came out really cute! (And they float!! They’re made of craft foam and I closed up the seams with hot glue, so they float!) Jen helped me cut out and put together about a dozen of the things – thank you, roomie!
So yes…and then I have my other classes too….they’re going well enough, but it all keeps me busy. I keep up with everybody’s blog though, and I can’t wait to see you all this summer!! I’m rather jealous that everyone else is out for the summer, but I won’t be home until June. Only eight more days of class, though!
