The first pair off the top of my head is cow/kine, but I’d have to do some checking to see if there are any kine mentioned in LotR… but I wouldn’t be surprised in Hobbiton, actually. Around Bilbo’s party, you know. Fireworks and all.

That’s the pair I was thinking of - yeah, I can’t recall it being used.

I think I found a word that fits, unless it’s a mass noun (like ‘money’) instead of an actual plural. Am I allowed to say it? =O
Yup, they do a weekly radio show on NPR, so they’ll give the answer on the show next weekend and then put it up on the site on Monday.

Hey! You ever watch any of those movies/Bab 5 I sent you? I wanna hear your thoughts (good or bad!) on them hon.

Oh yeah, Click and Clack (I think) the Car Talk brothers! My mom listens to them and I have fond memories of long car rides listening to their ‘charming’ Boston accents.

Well, it’s almost Monday. My word is ’sedge’, which I’m hoping can be used for a plural of ‘grass’.

….wow, I fail. All week long thinking about this and patting myself on the back about my words I failed to realize they share an ’s’ until I typed it out.

Carmen — according to my dad, Click and Clack didn’t give the answer on the radio today (it’s pending for next week), so I’m not sure whether it will be online tomorrow after all. The Tappitt brothers characteristically say to “get over it.” So we must continue to wait with baited breath. J.C. told me he found “kine” somewhere, so that’s our bet.
Liz — ditto on Click and Clack and their accents. One of my bosses has one kinda like it. My dad’s the Car Talk fan.
I will write more about the movies you sent me sooner or later, but so far I’ve really enjoyed What a Way to Go, Sliding Doors, and the first several discs of Bab 5 season 2. I’m in Phoenix this week for spring break, so Bab 5 obsessing will resume when I get back to Boston.

Aw, wow, I’m going to have to think about this one. Fun!!
I did find a pair of words that share no letters between singular and plural, but I can’t recall the plural ever having been used in LotR.

I got the sense it was an actual plural — otherwise there would be lots and lots.
Hmmm…let me ponder a little longer before you give us your answer, please.
Nice job on cow/kine, you guys! That would be a good one if it shows up.
Yeah, I’m just not certain if my word is a real plural or a mass noun. It sort of isn’t used much anymore. XD
They won’t have the answer up for a week.
